Grandparents Love (GPL) was founded in honor of  Jim and Marie McDaniel, whose love and selflessness shaped the lives of many. Our family’s roots in the Coachella Valley date back to 1948, when Papa Jim moved his family to Indio, where they became deeply involved in the community.

From 1970 to 1981, Papa Jim served as a beloved on-campus supervisor at Indio High School. More than a staff member, he became a grandfather figure to countless students, encouraging them to attend class, make positive choices, and believe in their future. Decades later, many former students still remember the lasting impact he made on their lives.

Grandma Marie retired from JCPenney in Indio after more than 20 years of dedicated service. She took great pride in caring for her family and making sure each of her grandchildren had quality clothing and everything they needed to feel confident and cared for.After Gramma Marie passed away, Papa Jim found himself thrust back into the role of primary caregiver for his daughters’ children due to unforeseen circumstances. Watching Papa Jim raise my cousins left a lasting impact on me. At the time, I couldn’t comprehend why he was shouldering the responsibility of raising someone else’s kids and struggling to make ends meet. But now, as a grandfather myself, I finally understand the depth of his love. He didn’t do it out of obligation; he did it because he loved each and every one of his grandchildren unconditionally. The sacrifices he made for them will forever remain unknown.

That legacy inspired the founding of GPL in 2022. Raising children all over again is an immense undertaking for anyone, particularly when age and health become factors.

OUR MISSION

At GPL–Grandparents Love, our mission is to provide vital support, resources, and advocacy for grandparents who are raising their grandchildren, with the aim of promoting the well-being and welfare of both grandparents and grandchildren.

GPL is guided by a dedicated Board of Directors and Advisory Board united by a shared commitment to supporting grandparents raising their grandchildren. Our leaders bring decades of experience in business, nonprofit leadership, finance, public service, education, community development, and military service all working together to ensure GPL remains accountable, mission-driven, and focused on creating lasting impact.

No. GPL exists to support families with dignity and compassion. There are no hidden fees or unexpected obligations.

Every family accepted into GPL completes a personalized Wants, Needs & Nice to Have list. This allows GPL to provide support that addresses immediate necessities while also recognizing the importance of comfort, dignity, and self-care.

GPL – Grandparents Love primarily connects families with trusted community resources and partner organizations. Assistance varies depending on available funding and program eligibility.

GPL – Grandparents Love offers a range of programs designed to support grandparents and caregivers as they raise and care for their grandchildren. Our programs provide resources, education, wellness support, meaningful family experiences, and caregiver assistance. Yes. GPL – Grandparents Love’s programs are offered year-round, based on program availability, participant needs, and scheduled activities. Some services and special programs may have specific enrollment periods, application deadlines, or event dates.

While GPL’s primary focus is supporting grandparents, we also celebrate and encourage the grandchildren they are raising. Each year, GPL hosts an Annual Sunday Funday exclusively for the grandchildren. This special invitation-only event provides a day of fun, connection, and memorable experiences as a way to honor the entire family and recognize the important role these young people play in their grandparents’ lives.

The first step in the selection process is completing a nomination form, which can be accessed here. Once submitted, each nomination is reviewed by the GPL – Grandparents Love Board of Directors based on the family’s individual circumstances, needs, and eligibility. Families are selected on a case-by-case basis to ensure GPL’s support reaches those who can benefit most.

Yes. Grandparents may nominate themselves for consideration. To begin the process, complete the GPL – Grandparents Love nomination form here. All nominations are reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the GPL Board of Directors.
